Pacific Rim: Uprising

Sometimes, you just know when a film has the potential to satisfy. PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING promises viewers plenty of action involving giant robots and monsters. Quite frankly, the film delivers on its promise in spades. It’s not quite as creative or inventive as the first PACIFIC RIM, but it has a great cast and solid action sequences that guarantee a fun time.

The Cloverfield Paradox

Released on Netflix with virtually no fanfare or warning, THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX completely took audiences by surprise. The film’s teaser trailer promised viewers that it would provide answers to what caused the events of the first CLOVERFIELD film, and it certainly delivers on that promise. But while the ties to the CLOVERFIELD franchise do ultimately elevate the film, the film’s main storyline is incredibly intriguing on its own.

Despite the cult status of BLADE RUNNER, I’m no fan of the original. I can appreciate the film for its legacy, but I find it grim, dark, and completely devoid of hope and likable characters. It took 35 years for a sequel to be created – something both oddly unnerving and inspiring. Yet even with a star-studded cast and a world-class director, I approached BLADE RUNNER 2049 with trepidation. I shouldn’t have. Right from the beginning, I was completely enthralled. By the time BLADE RUNNER 2049 had ended, I was actually speechless.

Blade Runner

There’s no denying the cultural significance of BLADE RUNNER. The noir/sci-fi aesthetic has served as an inspiration to countless films. It’s a film that is virtually impossible to discuss without diving into heated debates about which characters are Replicants and which version of the film is the definitive. In fact, the film is considered one of the finest of director Ridley Scott’s career. But when you strip that all away, BLADE RUNNER is ultimately a slow burn with incredibly low stakes – and too emotionally hollow to enjoy.
